A necessary survival tactic in Haiti is celebrating every small victory because (1) it's tough to get big ones and (2) the little ones add up. Today I had both small and big!
First the big win - by 7:00 this morning we had 550 men and women start work in one of our camps! It's been a lot of planning, training and overall great teamwork and we pulled it off without a hitch. It was very satisfying to have a moment to watch all of our hard work come together with such meaning. It was hard to capture the moment in photos because we were all very busy but I took this shot at 6:30 as our assembly line put together the hard hats that arrived over the weekend.
The small victory came on the drive home tonight when I saw a car pull close to a dumpster and instead of throwing their garbage out the window, they threw it into the dumpster! I started clapping and our driver said, "They must not be Haitian". Every day I'm in the camp I walk the kids over to the garbage can and show them how to put their trash inside. It all add up.
